Exodus12:37
37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth , about Six hundred thousand on foot, that were men , beside children .
A place so called either because there the Israelites first lodged in booths or rents▪ whereas before they dwelt in houses: or because there God first spread his cloud of sire over them, for a covering, Psal. 105. 39.
To wit, grown and strong men and fit for War, among whom there was none seeble or sick, Psal. 105. 37. Thus the Heathen writer Ch[illegible: 1+ letters]remon, mentioned by Iosephus, speaking of this matter, reckons up first 250 thousand, and then 380 thousand more.
The Hebrew word properly signifies strong and able men, fit to go on foot in battel aray: so decrepit or weak old men are not comprehended in this number.
And women, whose presence and assistance is necessary to them. See Exod. 10. 24. Some say the Hebrew word taph signifies their housholds or families, which consist principally of women and children.
Marginal references: Num. 33. 3.; Gen. 49. 11.; chap. 38. 26. Numb. 1. 46. and 11. 21.
