1. AND Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him into the South

(i. e.) Into the Southern part of Canaan, from whence he came, Gen. 12. 9. and which in Scripture is called simply the South, Ios. 10. 40. and 11. 16. Otherwise he went rather into the North: but the Scripture, being written for the Iews, doth frequently accommodate the names of the quarters of the world to them.
