5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus .

He doubtless loved them with a special distinguishing love; as persons chose in him to Eternal Life before the foundation of the World, given unto him by an Eternal Donation, called by him with an effectual calling, to own and receive him as their Saviour; but this text seemeth to speak of him as loving this family, with an human love, which inclineth man to a complacency in an object beloved; he had a kindness for the whole family: They had shewed him kindness in his state of humiliation; and he loved those that so loved him, Pro. 8.17.
