Matthew10:38
38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
We have much the same, Matth. 16.24. Mark 8.34. Luke 9.23. It is not he that maketh not, but he that taketh not his Cross, that is, he that doth not Willingly, and Chearfully, and Patiently bear, and undergo those Tryals, and Afflictions, and Persecutions, which God in the way of his Providence, shall lay upon him, and bring him into, for my sake, and my Gospel; is not worthy of the name or Reward of my Disciples. Our Saviour calls all such Tryals, The Cross; either with reference to the Roman last Punishment, by Crucifying or signifying what Death he should dye, and with reference to his own Cross.
Marginal references: Luke 14.27.
