Matthew4:7

7 Jesus saith unto him: It is written again, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

This is written, Deut. 6.16. To make an undue, and unwarrantable Tryal of God, is to tempt God, whether the Trya[illegible: 1 letter] respecteth his Power, or his Goodness, thus the word used, Num 14.22. Psal. 78.18. Isa. 7.12. Chap. 16.1. By this Answer Chri[illegible: 2 letters] lets the Devil know that he abused Scripture in his Quotation of it, such a casting of himself down, when he had a plain way to go down by the Stairs, would not have been an Act of Faith, but Presumption, not a trusting God upon his word, but a Tempting of God expressly contrary to his Command. Deut. 6.16.
