17 And he measured the wall thereof an hundred and forty, and four cubits , according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel .

This could not be the measure of the compass, (it was for that much too little,) nor of the heighth or breadth, (for either of them it was much too great,) from whence Dr. Potter concludes, it must be the square measure; so as the heighth and breadth of it was twelve Cubits, for 12 times 12 makes 144.
