Ecclesiastes7:23

Verſ. 23. I ſaid I will bee wiſe, but it was far from mee] Solomon here ſeems to ſay of wiſdome, as Nazianzen doth of God the author of it, Tantum recedit, quantum capitur. Not that wiſdome it ſelf doth fly away, but becauſe that they who have moſt of it, do eſpecially underſtand,Baſil. tract. de fide. that it exceedeth the capacity of any one to bee able to comprehend it (as Baſil gives the reaſon) ſo that they that think they have got demonſtrations, perceive afterwards that they are no more than topicae aut ſophiſticae rationes, topical or ſophiſtical arguments, as Lyra here noteth. Bonus quidam vir ſolebat eſſe ſolus, &c. ſaith Melancthon. A certain well-meaning man was wont to walk and ſtudy much alone, and lighting upon Ariſtotles diſcourſe concerning the nature of the Rainbow, hee fell into many odd ſpeculations, and ſtrange conceits; and writing to a friend of his, told him, that in all other matters, though dark and obſcure, hee had out-gone Ariſtotle, but in the matter of the Rainbow hee had out-gone himſelf. After this hee came into the publick ſchools,Joh. Mant. loc. com. 536. and diſputed of that argument, Et toto prorſus coelo à veritate aberrabat ſuis phantaſi[illegible: 1 letter], and then hee came to ſee that hee had been utterly out, and ſtrangely miſcarried by thoſe phantaſies, which hee had ſo ſtrongly fancied.
