Ecclesiastes8:3
Verſ. 3. Bee not haſty to go out of his ſight] Turn not thy back diſcontentedly; fling not away in a chaſe; for this will be conſtrued for a contempt: As it was in the Earl of Eſſex, Anno 1598. Diſſention falling out between the Queen and him about a fit man for Governour of Ireland, hee forgetting himſelf, and neglecting his duty, uncivilly turned his back, with a ſcornful countenance. Shee waxing impatient, gave him a cuff on the ear, bidding him bee gone with a vengeance. Hee laid his hand upon his ſword, the Lord Admiral interpoſing himſelf, hee ſwore a great oath,Camd. Eliſch. fol. 494. that hee neither could, nor would ſwallow ſo great an indignity, nor would have born it at King Henry the Eighths hands, and in great diſcontentment haſted from the Court. But within a while after, hee became ſubmiſs, and was received again into favour by the Queen, who alwaies thought it more juſt to offend a man, than to hate him.Blunts voyage pag. 97. The very Turks are ſaid to receive humiliation with all ſweetneſs; but to bee remorſeleſs to thoſe that bear up.
