Isaiah49:24
Ver. 24. Shall the prey be taken from the mighty] Not unleſſe he be overmatched and over-maſtered. The heathens were wont to ask, Who can wring a club out of Hercules his hand, or a light-bolt out of Joves? The Captive Jews here ſeem to ask, Who can deliver us from the Babylonians, who have both might and right for them? for we are their lawful Captives, and we ſee not how we can be ſet at liberty. Thus they thought at leaſt, if they ſpoke not as much; not looking at all to the power and faithfulneſs of God, ſed ad praeſentium rerum spectra, ac hoſtium potentiam. Thoſe that look downward on the ruſhing and roaring ſtreams of miſeries and troubles which run ſo ſwiftly under them, ſhall be ſure to be taken with a giddineſs, &c but ſuch as ſtedfaſtly faſten on the power and Promiſe of God all-ſufficient, ſhall be eſtabliſhed.
