Job15:10
Verſe 10. With us are the gray-headed, &c.] Job had ſaid, chap. 12.12. With the ancient is wiſdom, and in length of dayes is underſtanding. This, though modeſtly ſpoken, yet was very ill taken; and is here replyed unto with a great deal of heat; Sed ita ſolent importuni homines, &c. ſaith Mercer here: But ſuch is the courſe and cuſtome of unreaſonable men, to take every thing in the worſt way, and to deal rather by reproaches, then by reaſons; as Eccius, Sanderus, Gen[illegible: 1 letter]brardus, the whole generation of Jeſuites, of whom A[illegible: 1 letter]relius the Sorboniſt ſaith, and truly, that they are a ſort of men, qui nihil magis habent qu[illegible: 1 letter]m arrogantiam T[illegible: 1 letter]eologica[illegible: 1 letter] ni[illegible: 1 letter]il minus poſſident quàm Theologica[illegible: 1 letter] [illegible: 1 letter]cienti[illegible: 1 letter]m; Arrogant and yet ignorant; for whiles they think they know all things, they know nothing at all as they ought to know, 1 Cor. 8.2. As for Antiquity, (here ſo ſ[illegible: 1 letter]iffely pleaded) it muſt have no more Authority then what it can maintain. Papiſts boaſt much of it, as once the Gibeonites did of old, ſhooes and mouldy bread. But antiquity ſevered from verity is of no value: for as Cyprian ſaith well, Conſuet[illegible: 1 letter]do mala, vetustas erroris eſt. And our Saviour ſaith not, I am cuſtome, but, I am the Way, the Truth, &c. And God ſaith, by the Prophet Ezekiel, Walk ye not in the ſtatutes of your Fathers, neither obſerve their judgments, &c. but walk in my ſtatutes, and keep my judgments, and do them, chap. 20.18, 19.
