John11:3
Verſe 3. Behold, he whom thou loveſt is ſick] This was enough to ſay to a loving Saviour. Phil. 4.6. We need not be carefull in any thing, more then to make our wants known to God, and let him alone to helpe us, God may give the dearly beloved of his ſoul into the hand of her enemies, Ier. 12.7. how, and when he pleaſeth. So, to minde and move Chriſt for the labouring Church, it ſhall ſuffice to ſay, She whom thou loveſt is ſick, is in ill caſe, &c. But St Auſtin asketh, Si amatur, quomodò infirmatur? Oh, well enough: Afflictions are Chriſts love-tokens. As many as I love, ſaith he, I rebuke and chaſten. See my Treatiſe upon that Text.
