John11:37
Verſe 37. Behold how he loved him.] What? for ſhedding ſome few tears for him? oh how then did he love us, for whom he ſhed the deareſt and warmeſt blood in all his heart? Ama amorem illius &c. ſaith Bernard.
Verſe 37. And ſeme of them ſaid] Thus our Saviour is diverſly interpreted and cenſured: and ſo it is ſtill with his Miniſters. When we ſee our Auditours before us, little do we know with what hearts they are there, not what uſe they will make of their pretended devotion. Doeg may ſet his foot as far within the Tabernacle as David. If ſome come to ſerve God, others come to obſerve their teachers, and pick quarrels: yes, if conſcience might be judge, many a hearer would be found to have an Herods heart toward his Miniſter.
