John4:24

Verſe 24. God is a Spirit] Omnes nominis Iehovae literae ſunt ſpirituales, ut denotetur Deum eſſe ſpiritum. Though, Alſted. to ſpeak properly, God is not a ſpirit. For firſt, ſpirit ſignifies breath, which indeed is a body; but becauſe it is the fineſt body, the moſt ſubtile, and moſt inviſible; therefore immateriall ſubſtances, which we are not able to conceive, are repreſented unto us under this name. Secondly, God is above all notion, all name. Plut. lib. de Iſid. & Oſirid. Afri dicunt Deum ignotum Amon. i. e. Heus tu, quis es? One being asked what God is? anſwered, Si ſcirem, Deus eſſem.

In ſpirit and truth] As oppoſed to formality and hypocriſie.
