Matthew17:27

Verse 27. Lest we should offend them] Better it is that a man part with his right, then give just [illegible: 1 word] to any. This was S. Pauls great [illegible: 1 word], 1 Cor 9. and his constant counsell to others, Rom. 14. 13, 14, 15. Let no man put a stumbling block, [non-Latin text not transcribed] [illegible: 1 line] [illegible: 1 line] [illegible: 1 line] [non-Latin text not transcribed], [illegible: 1 line] [illegible: 1 line] [illegible: 1 line] much l sse a scandall in his brothers way, that is, neither a lighter, nor greater offence, but rather abridge himself of his [illegible: 2 words]. This is to expresse Christ to the world, to be made like unto him. Go thou to the Sea] Here Hierom cries out, Quid primum [illegible: 1 word] in hoc loco nescio, I knew not [illegible: 2 words] here to wonder at, whether Christs prescience or greatnesse. His prescience, that [illegible: 1 word] knew that the fish had money in [illegible: 1 word] mouth, and that that fish should come first to [illegible: 1 word]. His greatnes and power, that could create such a piece of mony by his bare word, and cause it so to be, by commanding it so to be. Who would not fear this Lord of hosts? Who would not trust him for necessaries, who can and wil cause all [illegible: 1 word] to scatter for his? But what a wonderful work of God was it, and a [illegible: 1 word] warning to us [illegible: 1 word] these [illegible: 1 word] daies of war, had we [illegible: 1 word] so wise as to have made good use of it, that God should send [illegible: 1 word] Friths Preparation to the Crosse, in the fish-belly, to the [illegible: 1 word] of Cambridge, a little before the Commencement, [illegible: 1 word] few years since. That such a book ([illegible: 1 word] the reverend man that relateth [illegible: 1 line] [illegible: 1 line] [illegible: 1 line] it) should be brought [illegible: 1 word] such a manner, and to such a place, and at such a time, when by reason of peoples [illegible: 1 word] cut of all parts, notice might be given to all places of the Land, in my apprehension [illegible: 1 word] can [illegible: 2 words] for no lesse then a divine [illegible: 1 word], and to have this voice with it, England prepare for the crosse. Give it unto them for me and thee] Upon this place, Papists would foolishly found their Popes primacy and Clergies priviledge of immunity from paiments to civil Princes and Magistrates: because Christ and Peter are set together. But in what trow? In paying of homage, not in receiving of honour. Christ paid tribute, to free us from the servitude of Satan that rigid tax-master. Peter paid, because he had here an house and family, Chap. 8. 5. and further to let his successours know, that they paid [illegible: 1 word] in Peter, and should learn in all due humility, to submit to Magistracy: and not to with-draw from publike impositions and taxations, further then of favour they shall be exempted and priviledged.
