PSAL. CXIX.

VErſ. 1 Bleſſed are the undefiled] Pindarus and other Poets had their Ogdaades or Octonaries.Lib. 4. Biblio[illegible: 2 letters] This Alphabeticall Poem (as Sixtus 8 [illegible: 1 word] calleth it) is Davids doubtleſſe (though it hath no title to ſhew to much) written in the dayes of his baniſhment under Saul; and far more worthy to bee written in letters of gold than Pind[illegible: 3 letters] ſeventh Ode, which that prophane fellow Politian preferred before any Pſalm of David, the ſweet finger of Iſrael. How much better his Co[illegible: 3 letters] [illegible: 1 word] Jacobus Furnius, who tranſlated this Pſalm into Greek and Latine verſes, [illegible: 1 word] many Octonaries; and beginning each verſe thereof with the ſame letter, after the manner of the Hebrew compoſure; which is very artificiall, both for the excellency of the matter, and for the help of memory. The Jews are ſaid to teach it their little ones the firſt thing they learn; wherein they take a very right courſe; both in regard of the heavenly matter, and plain ſtile fitted for all capacities. David (in his troubles eſpecially) was a man much in meditation of Gods word, and here hee giveth us in, his thoughts of it. When a book is ſet forth, verſes of commendation are oft prefixed. David ſeemeth to ſet this divine Pſalm as a Poem of commendation afore the Book of God; mentioning it in every verſe (unleſſe it bee one only, verſe 122.) under the name of Teſtimonies, Laws, Statutes, Word, Judgements, Precepts, &c.
