1689 London Baptist Confession, Chapter 6

Of the Fall of Man, of Sin, and of the Punishment thereof

Although God created Man upright, and perfect, and gave him a righteous law, which had been unto life had he kept it, and threatned death upon the breach thereof; yet he did not long abide in this honour; Satan using the subtilty of the serpent to seduce Eve, then by her seducing Adam, who without any compulsion, did wilfully transgress the Law of their Creation, and the command given unto them, in eating the forbidden fruit; which God was pleased according to his wise and holy Councel to permit, having purposed to order it, to his own glory.

Genesis 3:12

12And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

Genesis 3:13

13Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied, “and I ate.”

2 Corinthians 11:3

3I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ.

Our first Parents by this Sin, fell from their original righteousness and communion with God, and we in them, whereby death came upon all; all becoming dead in Sin, and wholly defiled, in all the faculties, and parts, of soul, and body.

Romans 3:23

23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 5:12

12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned.

Titus 1:15

15To the pure, all things are pure; but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure. Indeed, both their minds and their consciences are defiled.

Genesis 6:5

5Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time.

Jeremiah 17:9

9The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Romans 3:10-19

10As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.

11There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.

12All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

13“Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The venom of vipers is on their lips.”

14“Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”

15“Their feet are swift to shed blood;

16ruin and misery lie in their wake,

17and the way of peace they have not known.”

18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

They being the root, and by Gods appointment, standing in the room, and stead of all mankind; the guilt of the Sin was imputed, and corrupted nature conveyed, to all their posterity descending from them by ordinary generation, being now conceived in Sin, and by nature children of wrath, the servants of Sin, the subjects of death and all other miseries, spiritual, temporal and eternal, unless the Lord Jesus set them free.

Romans 5:12-19

12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned.

13For sin was in the world before the law was given; but sin is not taken into account when there is no law.

14Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who did not sin in the way that Adam transgressed. He is a pattern of the One to come.

15But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many!

16Again, the gift is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment that followed one sin brought condemnation, but the gift that followed many trespasses brought justification.

17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive an abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

18So then, just as one trespass brought condemnation for all men, so also one act of righteousness brought justification and life for all men.

19For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

1 Corinthians 15:21

21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.

1 Corinthians 15:22

22For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:45

45So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being;” the last Adam a life-giving spirit.

1 Corinthians 15:49

49And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so also shall we bear the likeness of the heavenly man.

Psalms 51:5

5Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

Job 14:4

4Who can bring out clean from unclean? No one!

Ephesians 2:3

3All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.

Romans 6:20

20For when you were slaves to sin, you were free of obligation to righteousness.

Romans 5:12

12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned.

Hebrews 2:14

14Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil,

1 Thessalonians 1:10

10and to await His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead—Jesus our deliverer from the coming wrath.

From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions.

Matthew 15:19

19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander.

The corruption of nature, during this Life, doth remain in those that are regenerated: and although it be through Christ pardoned, and mortified, yet both it self, and the first motions thereof, are truely and properly Sin.

24What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

25Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I serve the law of God, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

17For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want.
